Best Creality Ender 3 Upgrades

Creality’s Ender 3 is their entry level FDM 3D printer. It is year after year their most popular printer due to its affordability and quality prints. Though being such a great printer out of the box, there is still room for improvement. Other than the multiple great printable parts available on 3d model websites, you can also purchase some affordable upgrades that can turn your Ender 3 from a great printer, into something that can go head to head with the best.

Nozzle Upgrade

You may see nozzles for sale ranging anywhere from a couple of dollars all the way up into the hundreds. Whats the difference? Nozzles come in all different materials and coatings to suit different filaments. They’re also a small piece of hardware that needs to machined to precise measurements. Using a cheap nozzle can cause problems like clogs, uneven extrusion, fast wear, and even filament getting stuck to the nozzle dragging all over your prints. A good quality nozzle should last you a long time. We sell Micro Swiss nozzles because of their special coatings and their quality.

Silicone Bed Spring Upgrade

The Ender 3 is said to come with soft springs which can cause bed wobble and constant need to level your bed over and over. These silicone spacers are an upgrade compared to the standard springs. Made of high temperature silicone they work well at keeping your bed at the same height and also reducing vibration and wobble at high speeds. One thing to check when purchasing these is the length required. Some 3D printers require 4 at 18mm while others require 1x 16mm with 3x 18mm.

Dual Gear All Metal Filament Feeder Upgrade

One of the first problems most people encounter with their Ender 3 is the plastic filament feeder that comes standard. The plastic is known to crack around the bearing causing the feeder to lose tension causing under extrusion. While you could just upgrade to an all metal filament feeder, the better option is dual gears. Dual gears will give the feeder a greater grip on the filament giving you more constant feed rates.

Capricorn Bowden Tubing Upgrade

Upgrading your bowden tubing will fix two problems with the Ender 3. One being retraction. Capricorn advertising their PTFE bowden tubing for 1.75mm filament has a 0.05 deviation in size with an internal diameter of 2.0mm. While the PTFE makes the filament glide through your tubing, the precise internal diameter will get rid of the filament play between your extruder and hotend. The second benefit of Capricorn tubing is its high temperature resistance allowing you to print more exotic filaments at high temps.

PEI Spring Steel Bed Upgrade

Depending on the version of Ender 3 you’ve purchased you’ll either have a glass bed or Crealitys own textured platform sticker. PEI comes either in PEI film which is a smooth finish or PEI powder coat which will give it a textured finish. Which ever way you wish to go PEI will make your prints stick with no needs for glues or hair sprays. Simply pull it off when it cools down, give it a flex, and your part will release.

All Metal Hot End Upgrade

Micro Swiss offer a great range of straight swap all metal hot ends for the Ender 3 3D printer. With the standard hotend your bowden tube runs all the way through the heat break down to the nozzle. Even with an upgrade bowden tube you’ll still face some deterioration at higher temperature prints. With an all metal hot end the bowden tube runs to the top of the heat break. On the inside of the heat break is a machined and coated path for the filament to be pushed down into the nozzle.

Direct Drive Upgrade

A direct drive setup will bring your extruder closer to your hotend eliminating all the backlash within the bowden tube. This is a great setup for those who with to print with more quality as it allows lower retraction settings. The trade off being the extra weight added to the carriage. Adding extra weight can reduce the max speed your printer can print at. There are options like the Micro Swiss direct drive extruder setup which is a straight bolt on.

Controller Board Upgrade

The Ender 3 either comes with a 8bit main board or if you purchase the v2 you’ll receive their new 32bit main board. The controller board is the part that tells your printer what to do. Upgrading it can give you better steppers which can quiet the printer down, or a fast possessor to process g code commands quicker. We find the SKR e3 the simplest and most popular to upgrade an Ender 3. It is a straight fit and with its popularity there is plenty of guides and troubleshoot posts around to help you out.

The BL Touch is the most popular bed leveling probe used on Creality printers. Once again, being so popular you’ll be able to find printable mounts and wiring diagrams on how to install this on your printer. Once install the BL Touch builds a bed mesh it will move your Z axis up and down to the curves of your bed. Unfortunately the Ender 3 doesn’t come with a completely flat bed so the BL Touch is a great solution to getting perfect first layers.
